"Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey"
THE BEATLES
"Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey"
(Lennon/McCartney)
What was the inspiration for John Lennon to write this particular song? Paul McCartney mentioned on the Beatles Anthology that John got the idea from the Mahirshi, who said that everyone has something to hide. The Monkey reference was added by John later from a cartoon done in a London music magazine depicting Yoko as a monkey on John’s back interfering with his talent and relationship with the Beatles. But this was in the late 1960s with civil unrest, wars raging, and mistrust of Government. The Cold War was still in effect and spies were everywhere. Everybody had something to hide and secrets to keep.
People were frustrated looking for answers and experimenting with drugs like LSD. The Beatles themselves were going through a restless time and maturing in an effort to find their individuality. The Beatles retained a lot of information and spiritual advice from the Mahirshi. The lyrics of this particular song keep the positive reinforcement statements the Marhirshi applied to all his lectures to the Beatles while they were visiting India in 1968.
(Seems the same feelings are resonating truer today in our own time post 9-11, with the war in Iraq raging on, and Big Brother Government growing ever prevalent stealing our civil rights away in order to keep control and the peace, how significant over 40 years later after the creation of this song the message is still true. Not to mention the housing market meltdown, global recession, and alarming unemployment rate skyrocketing. Everybody has something to hide and secrets to keep. From stock market greed, banks, fraudulent loan companies, corrupt elected officials, cover-ups, misinformation, manipulation of media, and outlandish government-sponsored military secret operations being conducted every day.
People are indeed frustrated and looking for answers. This is an incredible time in history to test people’s faith and belief systems to the max. Worrying about it is not to going help if you actively do nothing. Using drugs is not going to help. Keeping politically active, informed, and mindful of critical information surely will. Never take anything just on face value, do the research, and have a public voice for change. Keep peace in your heart and pray to whatever God you pray to for peace and harmony. I know this message is kind of heavy, but to be a truly enlightened spiritual being, we have to rise above this difficult time, go deeper and higher, find the truth, joy, and love found buried deep in our hearts and soul, and make a positive difference to make the world a better place.)
